This week we started a bible study at Khulisa, a feeding center for children in the township. The bible study was started by the house visit ministry from last semester, they asked if we would continue loving on these kids since they were leaving. When we got there there were about fifteen kids that showed up for the study.

There was a boy there named Lucas, about thirteen years old,  who was not shy about asking questions or making his opinion heard. I liked him instantly. When we asked if anyone would like to pray before we began his hand shot up, among others, and they prayed some of the most sincere prayers I have heard in my entire life.

With eyes closed tight and hands clinched Lucas began to pray. “Oh my Lord, my God, please kill the poverty…” His words brought tears to my eyes. These children are surrounded by poverty. Their lives are entrenched in a corrupt system of abuse and theft, to hear this boy pray his heart out so boldly so bluntly, was heart wrenching and challenging.

Why don’t I pray like that? Not merely that God would provide for me and my family but that poverty all together would be abolished. Why don’t we pray big, dangerous prayers? Why don’t I pray from my gut sincere, raw, prayers for the masses? Prayers not just about my individual struggles but prayers for the pain and brokenness of the world.

With his eyes closed, and with words that came as if it was a fire within his bones  he prayed,
“Oh Lord, my God, please kill the poverty“.

May we have the audacity to pray the same kinds of dangerous prayers.
